Prelim task questions

The prelim task
1.       During the prelim task I was acting as camera man. I really enjoyed working with the actors and finding new and different camera angles that I had never seen before. I also really enjoyed working on a set as it gave me a sense of working on a real movie which I would really like to do as a profession. I really enjoyed working on the set with the different lighting as you could use this light and make it into an effective. I really enjoyed the professional approach that we undertook as it made the filming a lot smoother.
2.       When filming I learnt a great deal about being a camera man and filming a scene. Filming the scene taught me fully about the 180 degree rule and that it is fatal to disregard that rule. I learnt that there are always different types of shots and angles that you can experiment with.  I learnt that continuity is key and without it, when the scene is put together it will look terrible.
3.       I didn’t like the length of time it took to film such a short scene. Another thing that annoyed me was that some of the continuity wasn’t very good which made the scene look very shabby. The actors didn’t remember their lines some of the time which meant we had to spend more time on set. I also didn’t like that we felt a bit restricted within the set and I wish that we had more space to do filming in which would have made it a lot easier and it would have also allowed a wider variation of shots.
4.       We worked well in our group we handled the set well with everyone knowing there role and what they should be doing at specific times. The directing worked well with signals when to start rolling. He also manipulated the scene to improve it and he also moved the camera around to make it look better. We worked well as a team and as a result of that we got a lot of different shots and we made sure that actors were standing in the same position making sure editing will be as smooth as possible.
5.       If I could do it again I would change the scene around and make it easier to film. I would also decrease the brightness of the lighting. I would also have a bigger set and a longer scene so that we could have gone over what we wanted to do a bit more and filmed more shots. Furthermore this would have allowed us to get more angles. Another thing I would do is change the lighting more as the scene contained more pressure and maybe made the scene a bit darker.
6.       We work on the set so we didn’t have very much freedom on how the scene was run as we were working in such a small area. We were working on a set that looked like a living room of a family home. This linked into to what we were filming as ours was pear pressuring someone into smoking. We used props such as a cigarette and a lighter. Both of theses props were key to what we were doing.
7.       We did a lot of additional shots after the ones that we were asked to do. We did an extreme low angle shot and an over the shoulder shot. We also did a point of view shot which was very effective. We did a high shot and a tracking shot of both of the actors. The high meant that we could see where they were and what the subject was. We did an extreme close up on the props showing exactly what it is that he is trying to make us do and where it is from the high shot. We did a shot from someone outside the set through shutters and through the door this could imply that someone is looking at them and they need to do it now.
8.       Each person in our group had a direct role whether it was directing, camera man, continuity or props. I was camera man and I talked to the director a lot about new possibilities of shots and where the actors were going to be on stage. The continuity director worked very well and kept the actors in the same spot every time and made sure that the props were passed over by the right hand every time.

A2 movie analysis Catterina

Catterina

at the beggining of the scene it shows a man drving home which look slike its from work. there is digetic sounds of him driving and some techno eary music in the background. At the same time the scene cuts out and shows a gril in a room with a gun. She sees the man that is getting out the car and has a closs up of him which followed shortly after with a closs up of the gun illustrating that she wants to kill him.

Having spotted her subject she then continues to open up a gun case. There is then a close up on the gun as she un folds it. We then see the man getting out the car and start walking. When he gets out of her car we hear the digetic sound of her heartbeat although that it is over exagerated. The music becomes a lot more monotone and constant when he gets out the car showing that something is about to happen. There is an over the shoulder shot for dramatic effect and a point of view shot to reinforce that the man is her target.

She continues to look down her sight and loads her gun. There is a digetic sound of her loading the gun. Suddenly the camera cuts and shows a man that is outside who is obviously the hero. This is backed up by the fact that there is a slight change in the music when the man comes.

The camera then cuts back and looks at the shooter that is focusing on the target. The hero then bursts in the room and there is stand off between the two. the non-digetic music then fades out and the scene ends.

Kill Bill

scene 1

At the beggining of the scene we see two men in western clothing throw the bride into the a coffin and lock her in the coffin. The digetic sound of the men nailing her into the coffin show that she is being burried alive. The digetic sounds of her screaming and the extreme close up on her face both show that she is extremely scared. The digetic sounds of the siol being poared onto the coffin and the driving away of the car show that she has been left to die. Her breathing at this point is deliberately loud and is used to mirror her heartbeat and to emphasize how scared she is.

The camera angles now is purely a side angle. The mise en scene portray the coffin to be very small to show there is no hope. The camera angles show that there is no way of getting out as they show the surroundings of the coffin. the lighting is only represented by the flash light that she has. the red boots could be used ot show that there is no hope and could cymbolise blood. The only camera angle that is used is a side angle.

Hanna Report

Hanna report

The first sound that we hear is the doors opening and closing which is vault. This shows that she has been locked up. The crying sound shows that she might be frightened however shortly after we hear a neck breaking. This sound is meant to be digetic however the sound of the neck breaking is very unrealistic and is clearly emphasized. We see that the crying was a fasad and a decoy to lure the interegator in.

Gunshots follow shortly after, this shows the violence in the scene. The gunshots fire at the cameras in the room. After the final camera is shot the screen blacks out. This shows that this part of the scene is being seen through another person’s eye. Moreover when the glass breaks on the walls it is a one; digetic and two; very unrealistic.

The scene continues, she starts to run away and in the background you can hear digetic sounds such as footsteps and the noise from the guards. The non-digetic techno music is used to mirror a heartbeat. The music also gets faster when something bad is about to happen.

camera knowledge

What I’ve learnt about a camera                                                                               16-09-12
Firstly we put the tripod up and adjusted it to the correct height. We then balanced the camera with the bubble in the middle. You must then put the camera on the tripod. You do this by pressing a button and adjusting a lever to which part of the tripod you want the camera to be on. I then went on to turn the camera on and adjust the tripod to the angle I wanted for the specific shot.
There are two types of light synthetic light and natural light. When using natural light, i.e the sun. When filming it normally it comes out a stupid blue colour. Therefore you must do something called a white balance. This can be on anything white ranging from a pair of boxers to piece of paper. There are other types of light such as ambient artificial or low/high key.
When using a camera you normally perform a tilt or a pan. Panning is where a camera goes across where as if a camera goes up and down its called a tilt. Close ups by a camera are often used to show a prop that is about to be used. It can also show a certain facial expression which can also outline the mood of the scene.
We also focused on using shutter speed. Shutter speed is the amount of light let in by the camera. This will be used when filming a night scene so that you can actually make out what the actors/actresses are doing in the scene.
When using a camera, some camera men tend to zoom in and out during a scene this isn’t a good idea as you would have to focus every single shot that you do. When focussing up on a face you need to zoom in as far as you can on the face, focus that as best you can and then zoom out oto your preferred angle.
We also learnt about directing a camera and using continuity, which is keeping everything the same on a scene. We learnt about the words that a director uses, e.g. action and cut. We also learnt about the semi circle. We learnt that a camera man should operate within a semi-circle if not it shows the things behind the camera man and this could show another set…

children of men

The Children of Men
The first thing that you see when you look at the picture is Clive Owens face booming out at you with eyes directly looking at the picture. He is looking through a sheet of broken glass made intentionally so his face will just fit on the page. The film is set in the future and has a very perceptive title. Again in this film like many other thrillers and violent film the only part of the actor that you can see is his head and there is then darkness surrounding him. The stubble on his face makes him look like a very tough man. The edges of the Brocken glass also show it to be a very violent person.
The contrast of colours throughout the poster could show that the film is shown through different positions and through other people’s eyes. The red title stereo typically shows blood howver in this title one could say that the title is a good thing as there is also soon light blue in the poster.
Reiterating what I commented on earlier, Clive Owen is looking into the camera with a determined expression. He looks full of sadness, yet full of anger and hatred at the same time. There are also some slogans at the very top which state that ‘he will protect us’. This shows that he is the good character in this film as he is protecting hope. He also protects children which shows it to be an emotive film. He helps preserve peace which shows him to be a god in this film as if he governs over everyone.

The shining

The Shining
The first thing that we can see from the shining is that it is a horror film. There is an obvious crazed looked face. There is a dark light surrounding theman behind the door to create tension and show that he is a bad character. He is sweating which makes him glow in the little light that is put on him. His teeth are deliberately made whiter to show a stereo-typical bad character. His eyes are almost looking through the wall. His eyes are also black and full of a mischievous grin. He has a lot of stubble and the editor has made sure that only one strand of hair is coming down of his face. The axe makes him look like he’s going to kill her.

The girl behind the door has a deranged look in her eyes and she looks extremely weird herself. The viewer can see that she is being intimidated by the knife that she is holding in her hand. She also has
The lighting in the picture a very shocked look on her face. The girl is wearing all black which emphasizes; one the look on her face and two, the knife that she is holding. The girl looks vulnerable and scared. The girl also looks very weird and has the appearance of a Goth She is hiding and waiting for him to bursts in to the door. is extremely clever as they don’t show any of the attacker’s body from the neck down by using a black light on him. The girl has a bright light in the background which outlines her facial expression and the colour contrast between her clothing and the white background.

About me

My name is Charlie Farish i attend Hurtwood House schsool and I am 16 years old. I previously came here from a school in London. This is the first time that I have ever written a blog or studied media studies. I chose to stuidy media as i would like to pursue a proffesion in journalism. Having studied the media for a few weeks I have seen the usage of cameras and experimentiing with cameras which i really enjoyed. moreover I think that directing would be a good proffesion for me. Media can be directly related to theatre studies as it is the main component that aides.
I enjoy watching a wide range of films. iIlove the James Bond films and the Bourne films which are both series of action films however i also like romantic comedies and cartoon films such as the Heartbreaker.

howver my favourite films are Tarzan, Goldfinger, Top gun, Saving Private Ryan. tarzan was the first film that i saw in the cinema. I had to run out the cinema five times because i was afraid of the Lion. My most memorable piece of theatre was the lion king.
