The prelim task
1. During the prelim task I was acting as camera man. I really enjoyed working with the actors and finding new and different camera angles that I had never seen before. I also really enjoyed working on a set as it gave me a sense of working on a real movie which I would really like to do as a profession. I really enjoyed working on the set with the different lighting as you could use this light and make it into an effective. I really enjoyed the professional approach that we undertook as it made the filming a lot smoother.
2. When filming I learnt a great deal about being a camera man and filming a scene. Filming the scene taught me fully about the 180 degree rule and that it is fatal to disregard that rule. I learnt that there are always different types of shots and angles that you can experiment with. I learnt that continuity is key and without it, when the scene is put together it will look terrible.
3. I didn’t like the length of time it took to film such a short scene. Another thing that annoyed me was that some of the continuity wasn’t very good which made the scene look very shabby. The actors didn’t remember their lines some of the time which meant we had to spend more time on set. I also didn’t like that we felt a bit restricted within the set and I wish that we had more space to do filming in which would have made it a lot easier and it would have also allowed a wider variation of shots.
4. We worked well in our group we handled the set well with everyone knowing there role and what they should be doing at specific times. The directing worked well with signals when to start rolling. He also manipulated the scene to improve it and he also moved the camera around to make it look better. We worked well as a team and as a result of that we got a lot of different shots and we made sure that actors were standing in the same position making sure editing will be as smooth as possible.
5. If I could do it again I would change the scene around and make it easier to film. I would also decrease the brightness of the lighting. I would also have a bigger set and a longer scene so that we could have gone over what we wanted to do a bit more and filmed more shots. Furthermore this would have allowed us to get more angles. Another thing I would do is change the lighting more as the scene contained more pressure and maybe made the scene a bit darker.
6. We work on the set so we didn’t have very much freedom on how the scene was run as we were working in such a small area. We were working on a set that looked like a living room of a family home. This linked into to what we were filming as ours was pear pressuring someone into smoking. We used props such as a cigarette and a lighter. Both of theses props were key to what we were doing.
7. We did a lot of additional shots after the ones that we were asked to do. We did an extreme low angle shot and an over the shoulder shot. We also did a point of view shot which was very effective. We did a high shot and a tracking shot of both of the actors. The high meant that we could see where they were and what the subject was. We did an extreme close up on the props showing exactly what it is that he is trying to make us do and where it is from the high shot. We did a shot from someone outside the set through shutters and through the door this could imply that someone is looking at them and they need to do it now.
8. Each person in our group had a direct role whether it was directing, camera man, continuity or props. I was camera man and I talked to the director a lot about new possibilities of shots and where the actors were going to be on stage. The continuity director worked very well and kept the actors in the same spot every time and made sure that the props were passed over by the right hand every time.
